There are foods that make your body lose water through urination. You may not notice it at first but you actually urinate more often after consuming certain foods. This is called the ‘diuretic effect’. According to Mayo Clinic, foods with diuretic effects may not be advisable for people with normal or low blood pressure as it can cause their blood pressure to significantly drop.
What are Diuretics?
Diuretics refer to the substances that encourage urination. Many people think of diuretics as a term that implies many negative things. Actually, diuretics have many purposes. In fact, drug manufacturers are making diuretic medications. These are prescribed to people with high blood pressure. Diuretics are also used by people who are suffering from edema, a condition wherein there is severe accumulation of fluids in the tissues. As mentioned, the diuretic effects of some foods can lower down the blood pressure. Diuretics also help remove the toxins and other wastes in the body through urination. However, diuretics can be bad for the health too. Severe diuretic effects can cause dehydration and nutrient deficiency which can be very dangerous to your health. You may also suffer from lack of energy and fatigue.
Does Green Tea Have Diuretic Effect?
Foods that are high in magnesium, potassium, and caffeine are considered to be diuretic. If you’re a coffee lover, you must have experienced peeing like mad. The caffeine contained in coffee is responsible for this effect. Diuretic foods trigger dehydration in your body. As a result, you pee more often.
Now, what’s the relationship of all of these to green tea? Basically, green tea contains caffeine, just like coffee. Therefore, we can say that it is diuretic. However, the diuretic effect of green tea in the human body is very minimal. In fact, it’s not something that people should be worried of. Here’s the thing – the caffeine in green tea is only half of the caffeine content in coffee. Therefore, its diuretic effect is low as compared to coffee and other beverages or foods that contain caffeine (such as chocolates and soda).
Nonetheless, it is still important that you consult your doctor before taking green tea if you have history of being diuretic or if you are having health problems like low blood pressure. For people who require minimum fluid reduction, foods and beverages that have diuretic effects are recommended. But for those who have health concerns, they should minimize their intake. If you’re a green tea lover, it is important that you also observe moderation. If you’re not going through excessive urination or dehydration, then you don’t have to be too concerned about the diuretic effect of green tea. Otherwise, you may settle on the recommended dose which is 3-4 cups a day, nothing more. In addition, you can simply try drinking decaffeinated green tea. This way, you can be sure that you will not experience its diuretic effect which is caused by caffeine.
Even though green tea has many health benefits, it doesn’t come without side effects. But what is important is that these negative effects are very minimal. By observing moderation when taking green tea, you can always experience its positive effects without worrying about the risks.
