does green tea help with constipation

Constipation is a very common condition and almost every one of us has experienced at one point or another. While there are medications for constipation available over the counter, many people are looking for alternative remedies that do not produce too much side effects. Among these natural remedies, green tea is one of the most sought after.

Does Green Tea Help With Constipation?

The short answer is: yes, green tea can help ease constipation. How? Let’s look at some common causes of constipation. These common causes include stress, anxiety, lack of body fluids, lack of fiber, and depression. Green tea helps ease constipation by improving the general health of the person. Green tea has millions of amino acids and antioxidants that don’t just positively affect the digestive system but all other organs in our bodies as well. This healthy beverage has been proven to help reduce stress levels, anxiety, and depression symptoms. Green tea also adds to the level of body fluid. Furthermore, green tea improves the performance of the digestive system.

Green Tea Helps Promote Friendly Bacteria in Our Digestive System

One of the most promising health benefits of green tea is its ability to promote the proliferation of the friendly bacteria in our intestines. According to researches, green tea is considered a remedy for constipation because it helps produce good bacteria in the stomach which in turn resist infection and prevent irregularities in the bowel movement. Just so you know, not all bacteria are bad. There are some types of bacteria that help regulate bodily mechanisms such as digestion and metabolism. They make your digestive system stronger and more resilient to digestive problems such as constipation, diarrhea, and so on. Drinking 3 to 4 cups of freshly brewed green tea a day can ease constipation. In addition, green tea is said to reduce the odor of the feces as well.

Some Other Considerations

If you’re not a regular tea drinker and you often suffer from constipation, you may start drinking just one to two cups of freshly brewed green tea daily. The hot green tea will relax your colon and the natural properties of green tea will give you relief. This will encourage the bowel to move. Having an upset stomach can be an indication of more serious condition. Did you know that constipation or irregular bowel movement may be a symptom of colon cancer? If you feel like you’re always constipated for months, you should start adding green tea to your daily diet to repair any abnormality in your intestine. However, you should also consult your doctor. Natural medications such as green tea are not absolute cure. They’re only there to help you speed up the healing process. Other than green tea, you can also try chamomile tea and cardamom tea as they also help stimulate digestion.

    1. Hi Alexcia,

Even though there aren’t many studies on effects of green tea on small children, you should know that green tea contains caffeine, which may cause a number of side effects in children. If you really want to give green tea to your little girl, try unsweetened decaf green tea. However, I think you should take your daughter to her doctor for a medical evaluation.

  2. I have tried green tea for my chronic constipation problem and it really helped to a very large extent. However, couldn’t drink more than a cup of green tea daily.

      1. Many people have found it helpful. Try drinking a cup of green tea in the morning and another cup in the afternoon.

        1. If your doctors didn’t find anything wrong with your health, you might want to give green tea a try. Drink in moderation though. Maybe start with a cup in the morning and a cup in the afternoon. Just keep in mind that green tea isn’t some magic potion so it might take a while for you to see any effect. Also, make sure that you drink plenty of water during the day. Hope this helps.

    1. Are you drinking enough water throughout the day? Also, I find that drinking two tall glasses of water as soon as you get up really helps.
