The mechanism is dual. EGCG inhibits pathogen replication directly while also suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokines, the signaling molecules responsible for the swelling and pain response in your throat tissue (Rowe et al., 2007). The preparation detail that matters most here: simmering fresh root for 10 to 15 minutes in water releases significantly more gingerols than steeping a bag or adding dried powder. If you want ginger to do meaningful therapeutic work, how you brew it matters as much as whether you drink it.
Chamomile works through a different mechanism. Its primary active compound is apigenin, a flavonoid with anti-inflammatory and mild antispasmodic properties. Chamomile’s apigenin content has been studied specifically for its effect on mucous membrane tissue, and that translates to a calming, soothing action on an irritated throat (Srivastava et al., 2010). It’s also caffeine-free, which makes it a practical choice for evening use when maintaining fluid intake matters but stimulants don’t.
Peppermint deserves a specific mention because it works differently from the others. Menthol, peppermint’s dominant volatile compound, activates TRPM8 cold-sensitive receptors in throat tissue, producing a cooling, mildly numbing sensation that reduces the perceived intensity of throat pain without directly addressing the inflammation (McKay & Blumberg, 2006). Rooibos rounds out this list as a caffeine-free, antioxidant-containing option. It carries fewer active therapeutic compounds than the others here, but its mildness and complete absence of caffeine make it easy to drink throughout the day or in the evening without any added stimulant load.

When my throat is raw, I reach for fresh ginger and chamomile brewed together, a small piece of fresh root simmered for about ten minutes, then poured over a chamomile bag to steep. A generous spoon of raw honey goes in while it’s still warm enough to dissolve properly. I keep the mug just below hot, warm enough to steam gently, not so hot it feels harsh going down. That combination is more consistently soothing than any single tea I’ve tried on its own.
Temperature and Add-Ins: The Details That Actually Matter
One of the most overlooked factors in sore throat tea advice is temperature. The instinct is to brew as hot as possible, since it feels more medicinal. Lemon contributes vitamin C and mild acidity. Ascorbic acid supports immune function at the systemic level, and the low pH provides some antimicrobial activity at the local tissue level. Lemon works as a supportive addition rather than a primary remedy, but it’s a worthwhile one.
What Tea Can’t Do
Being direct about this matters. Tea manages symptoms and supports healing conditions, it doesn’t treat the underlying cause. If the cause is bacterial, antibiotics are what you need, not a longer steep. If your sore throat is accompanied by fever persisting beyond two to three days, significant difficulty swallowing, visible white patches on the tonsils, or notably swollen lymph nodes, those are signals to see a doctor rather than try another cup.
For the typical viral sore throat that accompanies seasonal illness, raw and uncomfortable but without the more serious warning signs, tea provides meaningful supportive relief.
