Its common name traces back to the Latin cattus, a nod to the unmistakable reaction domestic cats have when they encounter it. That reaction — rolling, rubbing, vocalizing — is triggered by nepetalactone, an aromatic compound in the plant’s essential oils that binds to feline olfactory receptors and sets off a brief neurological cascade. Humans, however, lack those same receptors entirely. So while cats go wild from simply sniffing the stuff, people experience something much quieter and quite different when they drink it as a tea.
European herbalists were using catnip long before anyone was buying it in a pet shop. It appeared in medieval remedy books as a treatment for fevers, nervousness, and menstrual discomfort. When settlers brought it to North America, it continued to be used as a calming tea — consumed in the evening the same way chamomile is today (Shafi et al., 1995).

The most well-documented traditional use is as a mild calming agent. Catnip has long been categorized as a nervine herb — meaning it acts on the nervous system to reduce excitability. Herbalists historically prescribed it for nervousness, insomnia, and general restlessness (Todd et al., 1995). The plant’s essential oils, flavonoids, and iridoid compounds are thought to be responsible for this action, with several compounds showing interactions with GABA receptors — the same neurochemical pathway targeted by many pharmaceutical relaxants, though at a fraction of the intensity.
Digestive comfort is another reason people have historically reached for catnip tea. The plant’s essential oils have demonstrated antispasmodic and carminative properties, meaning they may help relax the smooth muscle of the digestive tract and ease cramping, bloating, and gas (Gilani et al., 2009). This makes it a reasonable herbal choice after a heavy meal or on days when the gut feels unsettled. For those who already drink peppermint tea for bloating, catnip occupies a similar conceptual space — a mint-family herb with a quiet but real effect on digestion.
Catnip has also been traditionally used to ease menstrual discomfort. It appears in historical records as an emmenagogue — a category of herbs used to support menstrual regularity and relieve cramping. Whether this is primarily due to its antispasmodic properties or other mechanisms isn’t fully understood, but the traditional use is consistent across multiple herbal traditions (Todd et al., 1995).

It, along with a companion compound called linalool, appears to gently support GABA activity in the brain. GABA is essentially your nervous system’s “slow down” signal. More GABA activity means less mental noise and a quieter body. It’s mild — think of it as dialing the volume down a notch, not hitting mute.
Can Catnip Tea Help You Sleep?
This is the question most people are actually asking when they search for catnip tea for sleep, and the honest answer is: maybe, gently.
The sedative potential of catnip is one of its most studied properties. Nepetalactones have been classified as having mild-to-moderate sedative activity, and linalool — another compound found in the plant’s volatile oils — has shown anxiolytic and calming effects in animal research, with one study demonstrating that inhaled linalool produced significant sedation without impairing motor coordination (Milanos et al., 2017). Linalool also shows up in lavender, which may partly explain why both herbs have similar reputations as sleep-supporting herbs.
Research on the related species Nepeta persica found that its extract significantly increased time spent in the open, relaxed areas of a standard anxiety test, suggesting genuine anxiolytic effects at moderate doses — though it’s worth noting these studies were conducted in mice, not humans (Rabbani et al., 2008).
What’s lacking is robust human clinical trial data specifically on catnip tea for sleep. Most of the evidence is preclinical or based on traditional use. That said, the absence of strong clinical evidence doesn’t mean absence of effect — it means the research hasn’t caught up yet. What we can say is that the compounds present in catnip have plausible mechanisms for producing mild sedation, and centuries of consistent traditional use point in the same direction.
For practical purposes, catnip tea for sleep works best understood as a gentle wind-down tool rather than a pharmaceutical-grade sleep aid. Think of it the way you’d think about chamomile — not a sedative, but a cup of something warm and calming that makes it easier to let the day go.
What Does the Research Actually Show?
The scientific literature on Nepeta cataria paints a picture of a plant with real pharmacological activity, but one where the human evidence is still developing.
At the phytochemical level, catnip is a complex herb. Its essential oils are rich in nepetalactone terpenes, and it also contains flavonoids such as apigenin and luteolin, phenolic acids including rosmarinic acid, and various iridoid compounds. Together, these have demonstrated sedative, anxiolytic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and antioxidant properties across laboratory and animal studies (Khan et al., 2024).
The antispasmodic action has been studied directly. A pharmacological investigation of N. cataria’s essential oil found it could inhibit spontaneous muscle contractions in isolated tissue preparations via calcium channel blocking activity — a mechanism that helps explain its traditional use for digestive cramping and colic (Gilani et al., 2009).
The oral health properties of catnip’s essential oils have also attracted research attention. A PMC-indexed study found that N. cataria essential oils showed meaningful antimicrobial activity against common oral pathogens (Shafiei et al., 2014), which is a bonus property few people associate with the herb.
Where the literature consistently acknowledges a gap is in large-scale human trials. Most studies are in vitro (cell-based) or use animal models. This is common across herbal medicine research, and it doesn’t invalidate traditional use — but it does mean the claims should be held with appropriate uncertainty. What the data supports is that catnip contains biologically active compounds with plausible mechanisms. What it doesn’t yet fully confirm is the optimal dose, timing, or consistency of effect in human subjects.
How to Brew Catnip Tea
Brewing catnip tea is straightforward, and getting the method right makes a meaningful difference in both flavor and effect. I always use dried leaves rather than fresh when making it as a tea — the drying process concentrates the volatile oils without making the flavor sharp or harsh.
Use about one to two teaspoons of dried catnip per eight-ounce cup. Water temperature matters here: aim for around 90–95°C (just off a full boil) and steep for eight to ten minutes with a lid on top. The lid traps the volatile aromatic compounds that would otherwise escape with the steam — and those compounds are part of what you’re brewing for. Steeping too briefly produces a weak, watery cup that doesn’t deliver much. The steep time and temperature relationship matters just as much with herbal teas as it does with green tea.
The flavor is mild and pleasant — think gentle mint with a faint earthiness underneath, slightly softer and less sharp than peppermint. It’s not a bold cup. If you find it too mild, you can combine it with chamomile for a more rounded flavor, or add a small amount of honey and a squeeze of lemon to brighten it up. The honey also helps bring forward the herbal sweetness that’s already there.
The best time to drink it is in the hour or two before bed, which aligns with both its traditional use and the logic of its compounds. If you’re sensitive to herbal teas generally, start with one teaspoon and work up. A good tea kettle with temperature control is genuinely useful here since you want to avoid a full rolling boil.

Catnip Tea vs Other Calming Herbal Teas

If you’re already drinking herbal teas for calm and sleep, it helps to know where catnip fits relative to the more familiar options. The calming herbal tea category includes some well-researched heavyweights, and catnip sits solidly in the middle of the pack in terms of evidence strength and intensity of effect.
Chamomile is probably the most studied and widely consumed calming herbal tea. Its active compound apigenin binds to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain, producing gentle sedation. The research on chamomile for sleep and anxiety is more developed than catnip’s, and it has a milder, more neutral flavor that makes it easy to drink nightly. The calming effects of chamomile are well established as a starting point for herbal sleep support.
Valerian root is considerably stronger and often described as the most potent herbal sleep aid, but it also comes with a famously pungent, earthy smell that puts many people off. It’s better evidence-supported than catnip for sleep specifically, but less pleasant to drink.
Lemon balm occupies a similar space to catnip — mild, pleasant, with early research suggesting anxiolytic properties and a gentle calming effect. The two herbs are sometimes blended together for that reason.
Lavender tea sits closer to catnip in effect profile, relying on aromatic compounds including linalool — the same compound found in catnip — for its calming reputation. The sleep and anxiety research behind lavender gives that linalool connection some additional credibility.
One area where catnip distinguishes itself is digestive support. Of the four herbs listed here, catnip has the most documented antispasmodic and carminative properties, making it a particularly good choice for people whose sleep issues are compounded by gut discomfort at night. If your evening restlessness tends to come with an unsettled stomach, catnip tea’s dual action on both the nervous system and the digestive tract makes it worth trying. Understanding how the sourcing of herbal teas affects compound quality is also worth keeping in mind when shopping for catnip.
Is Catnip Tea Worth Adding to Your Routine?
If you’re looking for a pharmaceutical-level fix to a serious sleep disorder, catnip tea isn’t that. But if you want a gentle, caffeine-free herbal option with centuries of traditional use and a growing body of preclinical evidence behind it, it’s genuinely worth a try. I think of it as a quiet, dependable part of an evening wind-down — not dramatic, but consistently pleasant. The fact that it also supports digestion gives it an edge over teas that only work on one front. Brew a cup an hour before bed for a week and see how it lands. Sometimes the oldest remedies stick around for a reason.
